A charming little piece of French country-house dining, believed to date from the 1960s. This delightful pair of vintage fish plates combines beautifully illustrated freshwater fish with wonderfully elaborate gold decoration — a rather splendid combination of rustic countryside charm and traditional elegance. Believed to be French in origin and dating to around the 1960s, the plates feature two different but complementary designs. The first depicts a pair of golden-orange fish, with beautifully detailed scales and rich coppery fins, swimming amongst delicate green aquatic plants. The second features two striking pike, with their distinctive elongated bodies, green markings and reddish fins, set against a softly coloured watery background. Both illustrations have an almost watercolour-like quality, framed by ornate gold scrollwork, gently scalloped edges and fine gilded rims. A Touch of the French Countryside These are the sort of plates that bring to mind old French country houses, riverside retreats and leisurely lunches around a beautifully laid table. They would look wonderful displayed together on a kitchen dresser, hanging on a wall or incorporated into a traditional country-house dining setting. Perfect for lovers of French vintage tableware, fishing enthusiasts or anyone drawn to the slightly eccentric charm of decorative countryside ceramics. Please examine the photographs carefully, as they form part of the description. Why I Picked Them I have a real soft spot for unusual vintage tableware, and these were simply too charming to leave behind. I particularly love the contrast between the rather serious-looking fish and those wonderfully extravagant gold borders. They're decorative, nostalgic and just a little quirky — exactly the kind of pieces that make a home feel individual. Other coordinating fish plates from the same collection are available in my shop. Carefully packaged and dispatched from Cornwall. Some things deserve a second look.
