A little taste of the French countryside, circa 1960s. This charming pair of vintage fish plates is believed to be French in origin, dating to around the 1960s, when decorative tableware celebrating traditional country pursuits was a popular feature of European homes. Each plate features a beautifully detailed illustration of freshwater fish, surrounded by delicate green aquatic foliage against soft blue-grey watery backgrounds. The illustrations are framed by elaborate gold scrollwork, gently scalloped edges and fine gilded rims, giving these wonderfully characterful plates a rather grand finish. There is something delightfully nostalgic about them. They conjure up images of long lunches in French country houses, riverside fishing retreats and rustic dining tables laid for freshly caught fish, good bread and a leisurely afternoon. The Pair The two plates have complementary but different fish illustrations, making them particularly attractive displayed together. They would look equally at home on a French country kitchen dresser, a traditional dining table or hanging on the wall of a fishing lodge or countryside cottage. Details - Quantity: Two plates, sold as a pair - Origin: Believed to be French - Period: Circa 1960s, estimated - Diameter: Approximately 24 cm each - Material: Glazed ceramic - Decoration: Colourful freshwater fish illustrations, ornate gold borders and gilded scalloped rims - Maker: Unmarked Condition Both plates are in very good vintage condition, with no chips or cracks. Why I Picked Them I have a particular weakness for unusual vintage tableware, and these caught my eye immediately. I love the contrast between the wonderfully detailed fish illustrations and those rather extravagant gold borders. They're decorative without being too formal, with all the charm of a traditional French country kitchen. Perfect for collectors of vintage French ceramics, lovers of fishing and countryside interiors, or anyone who enjoys setting a table with something a little different. Other coordinating fish plates from the same collection are also available in my shop. Carefully packaged and dispatched from Cornwall. Some things deserve a second look.
