American Cavalry Style Bugle – Copper & Brass with Crossed Sabres Insignia A wonderfully characterful cavalry-style bugle, with its warm copper body, contrasting brass fittings and striking crossed-sabres insignia. There is something undeniably evocative about an old-fashioned cavalry bugle. Even today, its distinctive shape brings to mind mounted soldiers, military encampments and the sound of a bugle carrying across an open landscape. This handsome example takes its inspiration from the bugles associated with the United States Cavalry, featuring the traditional crossed sabres surrounded by an oak-leaf wreath. The raised brass-coloured emblem is particularly attractive, standing proudly against the beautifully aged copper-coloured bell. A Piece Full of Character The bugle has a traditional compact, looped form, with copper and brass-coloured construction, a flared bell and contrasting metal fittings. It retains its removable mouthpiece, together with a small retaining chain, a lovely practical detail that adds to its character. The surface has developed a rich, varied patina, with warm copper tones, darker areas of oxidation and mellow brass highlights. Rather than polishing it to a bright shine, I have chosen to preserve this finish, which gives the instrument much of its visual appeal. The Cavalry Connection The crossed sabres have long been associated with the United States Cavalry, becoming one of the most recognisable symbols of mounted military service. Bugles played an important role in military life, providing a means of communicating orders and signalling daily routines long before modern communication equipment became available. From reveille and assembly to calls marking different activities, the sound of the bugle became an unmistakable part of military tradition. This example follows that familiar cavalry design and makes a fascinating decorative object for anyone interested in American military history. Please note: No maker's mark, military issue markings or date have been identified. Its precise age and original purpose are unknown, and it is offered as a cavalry-style bugle rather than a verified military-issued antique. Measurements Approximately 32 cm overall, measured from the top of the mouthpiece to the bottom of the bell. Condition Good vintage-style condition, with no significant dents or obvious structural damage observed. There is surface tarnishing, oxidation, scratching and age-related wear across the copper and brass-coloured surfaces. The crossed-sabres emblem remains well defined. The removable mouthpiece and retaining chain are present. The bugle has been blown and produces a sound, although it has not been professionally tested for musical performance. The existing patina has deliberately been left undisturbed. Please examine the photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the condition description. A Decorative Piece of Military Heritage Whether displayed on a bookshelf, in a study, alongside military memorabilia or as part of a collection of vintage brass instruments, this bugle has a wonderful presence. Its simple, functional shape contrasts beautifully with the ornate cavalry emblem, making it both an interesting conversation piece and a striking decorative object. Why I Picked It I was immediately drawn to the beautiful contrast between the copper and brass, but it was the little crossed-sabres emblem that really caught my attention. I love objects that encourage you to investigate their history, and this one certainly sent me down a fascinating rabbit hole. I found a remarkably similar example described as a United States Army Cavalry bugle in a specialist militaria collection, although without identifying marks I cannot establish whether this particular instrument has any genuine military service history. And perhaps that is part of its intrigue. Whatever its origins, it is a lovely object with a distinctive design, plenty of character and a connection to a fascinating chapter of military tradition. Some things deserve a second look. Carefully packaged for its journey to its new home.
