Antique Aynsley Coffee Cans & Saucers with Sterling Silver Holders – Sheffield 1921 A beautiful glimpse into the elegance of the Roaring Twenties. This exquisite set of six Aynsley porcelain coffee cans and matching saucers, each accompanied by its own sterling silver holder, takes us back to a time when even the simplest pleasures were celebrated with a little ceremony. The silver holders are hallmarked Sheffield 1921, placing them firmly in the early years of the 1920s, an era of changing fashions, elegant entertaining and beautifully appointed homes. Imagine these delicate little coffee cans being brought into a drawing room after dinner, perhaps accompanied by a silver coffee pot, as ladies and gentlemen gathered to exchange conversation over freshly brewed coffee. In the fashionable homes of the period, fine porcelain and sterling silver were symbols of refinement. Coffee was not simply something to drink on the move, but an occasion to be enjoyed, with beautiful objects chosen especially for the purpose. These charming little cans would have been a luxurious addition to such a gathering. Beautifully Detailed Porcelain & Silver Made by the renowned English porcelain manufacturer Aynsley, the coffee cans and saucers are decorated with delightful colourful birds, delicate pink roses, daisies and other flowers, surrounded by graceful grey foliage. The gently scalloped rims are finished with rich gold gilding, giving the porcelain a wonderfully refined appearance. Each coffee can rests within a removable sterling silver holder, featuring an elegant pierced geometric design and a beautifully curved scrolling handle. The contrast between the polished silver, soft ivory porcelain, colourful decoration and gold detailing is particularly lovely. The silver holders bear Sheffield assay hallmarks for 1921, while the porcelain carries the Aynsley England backstamp. The Complete Set - Six Aynsley porcelain coffee cans - Six matching porcelain saucers - Six removable sterling silver holders, hallmarked Sheffield 1921 Measurements - Coffee cans: approximately 5 cm high - Saucers: approximately 12 cm diameter Condition This beautiful antique set has survived for more than a century and naturally bears some evidence of its long history. Four coffee cans appear to be in good antique condition, while two have damage, including chips to the rims. One also has a visible interior hairline, which may be a crack. These imperfections have been photographed and are reflected in the asking price. All six matching saucers are present and appear to be in good condition, with no obvious chips or cracks. All six sterling silver holders are present and have been carefully polished, revealing their lovely decorative detailing. There is some age-related wear to the gilding, consistent with the age of the pieces. The original presentation case is no longer present. Please examine the photographs carefully, particularly those showing the areas of damage. A Little Piece of Social History What I find particularly appealing about this set is that it represents something more than beautiful porcelain and silver. It offers a glimpse into the domestic rituals and social customs of another age. These were the years of afternoon visits, formal dining, elegant drawing rooms and carefully laid tables. Fine coffee services such as this were objects to be admired as well as used. Over a hundred years later, the world in which they were first enjoyed has changed almost beyond recognition, yet these delicate little pieces have survived. The silver still shines, the little birds and flowers remain wonderfully colourful, and the craftsmanship can still be appreciated. Why I Picked It I have a particular weakness for objects that tell a story, and this set immediately captured my imagination. I love thinking about the people who might have owned it, the conversations held around the table and the occasions for which these beautiful little cups were brought out. There is something rather wonderful about finding all six together, still accompanied by their matching sterling silver holders after more than a century. Yes, two of the coffee cans have suffered a little damage along the way, but I feel that is part of their history. They have been used, enjoyed and preserved through generations. I would much rather keep this lovely old service together than separate it into individual pieces. A charming and increasingly uncommon survival from the elegance of the 1920s, ready to be appreciated by its next custodian. Some things deserve a second look. Carefully and securely packaged for its journey to its new home.
