A beautiful example of British studio pottery by Cornish ceramic artist Nic Harrison, whose work is firmly rooted in the celebrated Leach pottery tradition. This elegant cylindrical stoneware vase features a wonderfully understated design, with diagonal incised lines, rich iron-brown brushwork and a softly mottled grey-green glaze. Its earthy colours and beautifully restrained decoration reflect the Japanese influence so closely associated with traditional British studio ceramics. The Potter Nic Harrison moved to Cornwall in 1975 and studied studio pottery at Cornwall College under William (Bill) Marshall. In July 1979, he was invited by Janet Leach to join the production team at the internationally renowned Leach Pottery in St Ives, becoming the last student to be trained there. In 1981, Harrison and his wife Jackie established their workshops at the Trelowarren Estate on Cornwall's Lizard Peninsula, where they worked for approximately 25 years. His pottery combines the traditions of British craftsmanship with Japanese-inspired simplicity, producing pieces that are both functional and beautifully individual.
