A Soldier, a Town and a Date That Changed History Original First World War Commemorative Certificate – Swindon, 28 June 1919 Some historical objects tell us exactly what happened. Others leave behind intriguing questions waiting to be answered. This beautifully illustrated First World War presentation certificate, issued by the citizens of Swindon, Wiltshire, is one of those objects. With its richly coloured illuminated lettering, ornate floral borders and historic town coat of arms, it was created to express the gratitude of a community towards those who served during the Great War of 1914–1918. But look a little closer, and there is a fascinating story to explore. The Soldier – Henry S. Jefferies The certificate bears the name Sergeant Henry S. Jefferies, applied on a typed label over an earlier handwritten inscription. Research has uncovered a tantalising possible connection. The Imperial War Museums' Lives of the First World War database includes a Sergeant Henry S. Jefferys, whose recorded service included: - Royal Wiltshire Yeomanry – No. 1198 - Machine Gun Corps – No. 100840 - Reserve Regiment of Cavalry – No. 42608 The similarity of the name, matching rank and Wiltshire military connection make this an intriguing possibility. Could this be the same soldier? The spelling differs slightly, and the connection has not yet been conclusively established. It remains a wonderful opportunity for further historical or genealogical research. A Remarkable Date – 28 June 1919 Perhaps the most extraordinary feature of this certificate is its date. 28 June 1919 was the very day the Treaty of Versailles was signed in the Hall of Mirrors at the Palace of Versailles, formally establishing the peace terms between Germany and the Allied powers following the First World War. It was also exactly five years after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand on 28 June 1914, the event that helped set the conflict in motion. While the reason for choosing this particular date for the Swindon certificate has not been established, the historical coincidence is remarkable. As European leaders gathered at Versailles, this certificate commemorated the service and sacrifice of an individual soldier in an English town. Two very different perspectives on the same moment in history. One Last Mystery Beneath the typed recipient's name, part of an earlier handwritten inscription remains visible. Was this simply an administrative correction? A change in spelling? Or was the certificate originally prepared for somebody else? We do not know. The label is firmly attached and has deliberately been left undisturbed to preserve the original document. Perhaps its next custodian will uncover the answer. Why I Picked It For its extraordinary artwork, its connection to one of the most significant dates of the twentieth century, and the possibility of discovering the man behind the name. More than a century after the guns fell silent, this certificate survives as a small but deeply personal reminder of the First World War. A beautiful piece of history, with perhaps one chapter still waiting to be written.
