A wonderful Victorian Sowerby pressed-glass “Daisy Block Rowboat”, pattern number 1874, complete with the Sowerby peacock trademark. This is not simply an unidentified Victorian pressed-glass dish: the design can be traced directly to Sowerby’s 1885 catalogue, where pattern 1874 is illustrated as the Daisy Block Rowboat and shown as having been produced in three sizes. This example measures approximately 26 cm (10¼ inches) long × 9 cm wide × 4 cm high and is made in clear pressed glass. The wonderfully literal rowboat form is decorated with a band of repeating daisy/star blocks along its sides, with strongly moulded ribbing and geometric detail. The Sowerby peacock trademark provides further confirmation of the maker. Sowerby later revived this old mould for Carnival Glass production, with the 12-inch version being produced in colours including marigold, amethyst and aqua. This clear example belongs to the earlier pressed-glass tradition represented by the Victorian catalogue design. CONDITION Excellent antique condition with no chips or cracks noted.
