A beautiful little antique porcelain vase that turned out to have considerably more history than first meets the eye. Dating to 1919, this small hand-painted vase has a wonderfully atmospheric Oriental maritime scene, with a traditional sailing junk moving across green-blue water beneath a pale moon. A softly painted pink city or harbour skyline disappears into the distance, giving the decoration an almost dreamlike quality. The reverse continues the landscape, with small boats on the water and the skyline stretching around the body of the vase. What makes this example particularly interesting is the solid sterling silver collar around the neck. The silver carries a full set of English hallmarks, including the lion passant for sterling silver, the London leopard's head assay mark and the date letter 'u', dating the silver mount to 1919. There is also a separate, somewhat worn sponsor/maker's punch which appears to read CJP. This is consistent with the registered mark of C. J. Plucknett & Co Ltd / Charles John Plucknett, whose mark was in use in London during this period. Because the punch has suffered wear, I have described the Plucknett attribution as probable rather than absolute. The base of the porcelain carries a blue diamond-shaped 'HAND PAINTED ORIENTAL' mark. I particularly like the contrast between the delicate pastel porcelain and the substantial silver collar. At just 12 cm high it is a lovely cabinet-sized piece, but the silver mount and beautifully painted sailing scene give it far more presence than its size might suggest. MEASUREMENTS Approximately 12 cm high × 8 cm wide. DATE 1919 – the sterling silver collar is London hallmarked for this year. MARKS • Hand Painted Oriental base mark • English lion passant – sterling silver • London assay mark • Date letter 'u' – 1919 • Worn CJP sponsor/maker's mark, attributed to C. J. Plucknett & Co Ltd CONDITION Good antique condition with age-related wear commensurate with a piece over 100 years old. The sterling silver collar shows surface marks, tarnishing and wear, including wear around the hallmarks. Please study the photographs carefully as they form part of the description. A charming and rather unusual survivor combining early 20th-century hand-painted porcelain with a properly hallmarked English sterling silver mount. A particularly appealing piece for a collector of antique porcelain, English silver, Orientalist decorative wares or maritime antiques.
