MOLLY SPOONER – ATTRIBUTED ORIGINAL DARTMOOR WATERCOLOUR 38x35 cm. A beautiful original watercolour of the Devon countryside, signed “M Spooner” and attributed to Mary Florence “Molly” Spooner MBE (1914–1997), marine biologist, naturalist and long-term resident of the Yelverton/Crapstone area on the edge of Dartmoor. The painting depicts a wonderfully atmospheric local landscape with a winding lane, traditional stone walls and mature trees. THE MOLLY SPOONER CONNECTION The attribution is based on several interesting pieces of evidence. Other signed watercolours depicting Dartmoor are known under the names Molly Spooner and M Spooner, including a work titled “Dartmoor Tor”. Mary Florence “Molly” Spooner lived at Crapstone/Yelverton, on the edge of Dartmoor, and had a strong interest in the area's landscape and natural history. Although best known as a marine biologist and naturalist, she also had documented artistic interests, including designing and working a piece entitled “On Dartmoor” for St Paul’s Church, Yelverton. She was awarded an MBE in 1977 for her work relating to marine pollution hazards. This painting was found locally in Tavistock, just a few miles from the area where Molly Spooner lived. The combination of the M Spooner signature, subject, known Molly Spooner Dartmoor watercolours, her documented artistic interests and the very local provenance makes the attribution particularly compelling. I have not, however, found documentary evidence linking this individual painting directly to Mary Florence Spooner, so it is responsibly offered as ATTRIBUTED TO rather than authenticated. Original watercolour on paper Signed “M Spooner” Vintage framed & mounted Found in Tavistock, Devon A lovely piece of Dartmoor art with a fascinating local story.
