A wonderfully strong little piece of 1970s British studio pottery by Hubert Corbett of Sutherland Pottery, Scotland. This compact stoneware pot has a beautifully architectural form, with a broad rounded body rising through a stepped shoulder to a substantial shaped rim. The decoration is particularly striking: broad charcoal-black bands contrast against the natural sandy stoneware, with the throwing lines and texture of the clay deliberately left visible. The restrained palette and bold geometric banding give it a distinctly modernist feel. Despite its small scale, it has real presence and would sit beautifully amongst a collection of British studio ceramics or as a standalone piece on a shelf, desk or mid-century interior. ABOUT HUBERT CORBETT Hubert Corbett, born in 1943, is a British studio potter associated with Sutherland Pottery at Lairg in the Scottish Highlands. His work is particularly recognisable for its robust stoneware forms, earthy surfaces and strong graphic decoration. Recorded examples of his work include tall stoneware vessels decorated with bands of black glaze and incised linear detail – characteristics that can also be seen in this smaller pot. Corbett's pottery belongs to a particularly interesting period of British ceramics, when studio potters increasingly allowed the qualities of the clay, throwing marks and contrasting glazes to become part of the decoration rather than disguising them beneath highly finished surfaces. This piece has that unmistakable 1970s studio pottery character: tactile, understated and designed around the material itself.
