  • £75.00

:  at  £75.00  each

A distinctive stoneware goblet or small pedestal vessel by highly regarded British studio potter Geoffrey Whiting (1919–1988). The gently flared form is covered in a softly speckled oatmeal glaze, leaving the lower foot and central applied medallion unglazed. The medallion features a hand-incised HV monogram surrounded by linear decoration and a textured border. CONDITION Excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or noticeable marks. MEASUREMENTS Approximately 10 cm high × 7 cm across the rim. MAKER AND MARK The piece bears Geoffrey Whiting’s impressed early quartered-circle seal mark. Whiting established Avoncroft Pottery in Worcestershire after returning to Britain in 1949. Regarded as an important exponent of British studio pottery, he became particularly known for his restrained, beautifully balanced forms influenced by Korean and Japanese ceramic traditions. The meaning of the applied HV monogram has not been identified, but it gives this individually made piece an especially unusual and intriguing character. A collectable example of post-war British studio ceramics and a particularly interesting piece for collectors of Geoffrey Whiting and Avoncroft Pottery.
