A charming small antique porcelain engraving depicting Stockbridge, Hampshire, produced by Challen Foster of Steyning, Sussex. The finely detailed scene shows historic Stockbridge with its waterway, buildings and distinctive clock tower, the name “Stockbridge · Hampshire” printed beneath. The monochrome engraving has a wonderfully delicate quality and is presented in its original-style dark wooden frame with a fine gilt inner border. The original label remains on the reverse and reads: “An Original Hand Enamelled Engraving on Porcelain, by Challen Foster, Steyning, Sussex, England. Copyright.” Examples of these Challen Foster ceramic pictures are commonly described in the antiques market as dating from around 1880 / the late 19th century. As the surviving label itself is undated, I have described this piece as c.1880 rather than assigning it an exact year. A particularly lovely little piece of English decorative art, combining an unusual porcelain medium with a very specific Hampshire subject. Its small scale makes it perfect for a gallery wall, bookshelf, study or collection of antique British topographical pieces. SIZE Approximately 13 x 13 cm overall including frame. CONDITION Good vintage/antique condition with age-related wear to the wooden frame as shown in the photographs. Please study all photographs as they form part of the description. The original Challen Foster identification label remains attached to the reverse. A lovely survivor and an appealing piece for a collector of Hampshire history, Stockbridge memorabilia, antique ceramic pictures or Victorian decorative art.
