A wonderfully timeworn antique children’s book, “David Elliott; or, True to His Promise” by C. E. Irvine, published in London by John F. Shaw & Co. This is a particularly charming survivor because it retains its original handwritten prize label, dated 1907: “Hutchinson Hall Board of Hope 2nd Prize Awarded to Thomas Thomson for regular attendance and good conduct 1907.” The book has an attractive deep red cloth binding with gilt title and decorative silver-toned illustrations. The front depicts a dramatic tiger encounter, while the spine carries a further period illustration. Inside are decorative chapter headings and black-and-white illustrations, giving it all the character you want from an early children’s adventure book. The title page describes this as a “New Edition”. No printed publication date is visible, but the surviving presentation label firmly places this particular copy in use by 1907. CONDITION: This is a genuinely old and well-used book and its condition reflects that history. There is considerable wear and marking to the red cloth boards, with fading and rubbing to the decoration. Most noticeably, the cloth at the top of the spine is frayed and worn with some loss. The pages show age-related toning, spotting and occasional marks. Please study the photographs carefully as they form an important part of the condition description. Not a pristine collector’s copy – but a characterful antique book with a lovely piece of documented social history inside. The 1907 prize inscription makes it particularly appealing for collectors of antique children’s books, school and Sunday-school prizes, decorative bindings and historical ephemera.
