A wonderfully characterful vintage studio pottery jug by P&E Hall of Pennine Studios, Burnley, Lancashire, dating from around the 1980s. The jug has a warm honey-ochre glaze with loosely painted landscape decoration in earthy greens and browns. Trees, hedgerows and simple architectural forms give the piece an almost naïve, painterly quality, while the pronounced hand-formed pouring lip gives it a particularly sculptural shape. The base carries the hand-painted P&E Hall mark associated with Pennine Studios. Pennine Studios operated from Kidrow Lane in Burnley, Lancashire. The pottery is associated with Peter and Edna Hall, producing individually decorated studio ceramics with a distinctly British, handmade character. This is a particularly appealing example: understated from a distance but full of small brushwork details when viewed closely. It would work beautifully displayed with other British studio pottery or simply as a decorative piece in its own right. A genuine vintage piece with the small variations and signs of hand production that give studio pottery its individuality. Please study the photographs carefully as they form part of the description.
