A wonderfully characterful antique treen box featuring a hand-painted coastal scene from Boulogne, France. Turned from wood and finished in a rich dark brown, the box has an unusual fixed arched handle and attractive hand-tooled decoration around the lid and handle. Set into the top is a charming painted scene depicting a traditional fishing boat beside the harbour, with “Boulogne” inscribed across the image. Boulogne-sur-Mer has a long maritime and fishing history, making this a lovely piece of early French coastal souvenir ware. The interior has been left in its natural pale wood, beautifully showing the concentric turning marks from its manufacture. Dating to approximately the early 20th century, likely c.1900–1930, this is a particularly appealing example of vintage/antique treen. The combination of turned wood, folk-art style painted decoration and maritime subject gives it far more character than a typical souvenir piece. Perfect for a collector of antique treen, French folk art, maritime pieces or unusual decorative boxes. DETAILS • Antique turned wooden treen box • Boulogne, France • Hand-painted fishing boat / harbour scene • Fixed arched wooden handle • Hand-tooled decorative finish • Natural turned wood interior • Early 20th century – estimated c.1900–1930 SIZE Approx. 10.5 cm wide Approx. 11.5 cm high including handle Approx. 4 cm high excluding handle CONDITION Good antique condition with genuine age-related wear throughout. There is surface wear and patination to the wood and fine age-related crazing and marks to the painted panel, all of which can be seen in the photographs. These signs of age form part of the character of this old handmade piece rather than detracting from it. Please study all photographs carefully as they form an important part of the description. A small and rather lovely survivor with bags of old-world maritime character.
