A striking signed studio pottery vase with a beautifully rounded form and wonderfully expressive abstract decoration. Standing 20 cm high, this is a substantial piece with real presence. The body is wheel-thrown and finished in a soft speckled grey-green glaze, contrasted with bands of rich rust, earthy brown and near-black. Around the widest part is a wonderfully free abstract design, giving the vase an almost landscape-like quality. The combination of its strong shape, earthy palette and individual decoration makes this a particularly attractive example of studio pottery – equally at home in a collection or simply displayed as a statement piece. The base carries a large, confidently incised maker's signature. Despite considerable research, I have not been able to identify the potter with enough certainty to make an attribution, so it is being offered honestly as an unidentified signed studio piece. The signature is clearly photographed and may well be recognisable to a collector. DETAILS • Height: approx. 20 cm • Circumference at widest point: approx. 50 cm • Approx. widest diameter: 16 cm • Wheel-thrown studio pottery • Grey-green, rust, brown and dark abstract decoration • Incised artist's signature to base • Maker currently unidentified CONDITION Please study all photographs carefully as these form an important part of the description. Any minor variations in glaze and finish are part of the handmade nature and character of studio ceramics. A handsome, tactile piece of pottery that doesn't need a famous name to earn its place on a shelf. Vintage and handmade pieces may show small signs of age, manufacture and previous use, all part of their individual character.
