  • Vintage Canuck Pottery Evangeline Ware Jug | Orange Black Drip Glaze (1960s)

  • £38.00

:  at  £38.00  each

A wonderfully bold vintage ceramic jug with a fabulous fiery orange, rust and black glaze. The low, rounded body is paired with an unusually large sweeping loop handle and flared pouring lip, giving it a really sculptural profile. The glaze is particularly striking, graduating from vivid burnt orange across the body into deep glossy brown-black around the neck and handle, with dark mottling running through the surface. It has a strong 1960s/1970s European studio pottery feel and sits beautifully alongside West German, Scandinavian and other mid-century ceramics. With no maker’s mark or surviving label, however, I am deliberately selling this as an unattributed vintage piece rather than assigning it to a particular pottery. A great decorative piece for a mid-century, retro or contemporary interior — substantial enough to stand alone on a shelf, sideboard or console table. MEASUREMENTS Approx. 13.5 cm high Approx. 17 cm wide MAKER / ORIGIN Canuck pottery Canada CONDITION Vintage condition. Please study all photographs carefully as they form an important part of the description. WHY I LIKE IT It is the combination of shape and colour that makes this one. The huge dark handle almost turns the jug into a piece of sculpture, while that intense orange glaze gives it unmistakable retro character. A distinctive piece of vintage pottery that deserves another look. ABOUT THE MAKER Attributed to Canuck Pottery and its Evangeline Ware range, produced in Canada during the mid-20th century. Canuck Pottery was established in Saint John, New Brunswick in 1938 as a continuation of the Foley family's pottery business. The company became known for colourful decorative and functional ceramics, including the distinctive Evangeline Ware range. Following a fire at the Saint John factory in 1963, production moved to Labelle, Quebec. Evangeline pieces were produced in a variety of rich drip glazes, and their bold forms and colours now make them particularly appealing alongside other mid-century studio and art pottery. This jug is unmarked and any original paper label is now absent, so the attribution is based upon comparison with documented and labelled examples rather than a surviving maker's mark.
